In the quiet corners of the north

2025 Jun 09

Sometimes, having no plan can be the best approach to creating lasting memories.

“A trip to the north sounds like a dream. I’m taking the train!” And that’s precisely what she did. With quick decisions and little planning, our Head of Impact Travel at Authenticities, Madara, embarked on an unforgettable journey to Jaffna just a few weeks ago. Over four days, fueled by enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure, she chose to embrace spontaneity while exploring the iconic northern peninsula. Adding an exciting twist to her travels, she relied solely on public transportation throughout her trip. Naturally, with such minimal planning, she ventured into the less-travelled paths of northernmost Jaffna, relishing genuine and immersive interactions with locals who welcomed her like family.

Put simply, Jaffna is what someone would describe as “that little peninsula at the northern tip of the mango-shaped island of Sri Lanka. This magnetism is no mere flight of fancy. Despite there any many other attractions that would conjure up a traveller to this petite island, Jaffna remains a unique attraction, perhaps only those who have travelled far and wide would venture into. The city harbours such magnetism that is hard to define and harder to resist.

Scenic beauty and deep-rooted cultural influence, Jaffna has in abundance. With a relatively warmer climate and gentle, dream-like Indian Ocean stretching into the horozon, Jaffna is not only a destination with historical and poetic fancy, but also of people who give a kaleidoscopic character to the place. Moulded by harsh climate, rugged terrains and protean Tamil religion, Jaffna is a world of its own, right full of mythology and legend.

Though it’s nearly impossible to contain the magnetism of the north to a mere few pages, the culmination could, however, be about the incredible food experience Madara was able to immerse herself in during her visit. From where she was stationed at the heart of the city, within a 30-minute tuk-tuk drive, further into the outskirts of the city, called Catumaran. During her visit, she enjoyed what she asserts to be the finest meal she has encountered in the entire northern province. Tucked away in the rural countryside is a quaint villa with raw aesthetics where you can enjoy an authentic cooking experience with the lovely ladies who run the place. Under the guidance of these local chefs, she learned how to prepare and cook an amazing serving of seafood lunch using traditional Jaffna spices and techniques. This immersive experience not only offers a taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage but also provides a unique opportunity to engage with the local culture and community. Ultimately, what turned out to be a spontaneous trip to the northern peninsula ended up being one of the most invigorating encounters Madara has experienced in her whole existence. She believes the only thing better than enjoying the good things in life is sharing them, and this belief inspired her to craft a new itinerary focused on exploring the untrodden paths of northern and eastern Sri Lanka.
